Asa Watkins performed his alternative service working in a mental hospital in Virginia. He became a reformer of the state mental health system and as an activist, artist and special education teacher after the war and throughout his life.

While working at the mental hospital and living in Waldport, Watkins expressed his feelings through drawings.
